The Impact of VAR on the Premier League: Controversy, Alternative Table, and Affected Teams

Since its introduction to the Premier League in the 2019/20 season, VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has been a source of controversy and debate. While some teams have benefited from its decisions, others have found themselves on the receiving end of unfavorable outcomes.

Controversy Surrounding VAR

The Premier League's governing body, PGMOL, has faced mounting pressure to improve the usage of the VAR system. Several incidents have left managers enraged, leading to calls for better implementation.

One such incident occurred in September when Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, called for a match against Tottenham to be replayed. VAR failed to overturn an incorrect on-field decision, resulting in a disallowed goal by Luis Diaz.

An Alternative Premier League Table

To shed light on the impact of VAR on each team, an alternative Premier League table has been calculated. This table takes into account all result-defining decisions made this season and compares them to the decisions made by the on-pitch referee.

The Most Affected Teams

According to the alternative table, Newcastle United has suffered the most due to VAR. Without VAR interventions, they would have three more points, placing them seventh in the standings instead of eighth.

Chelsea, under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, has had a disappointing season. Currently sitting in 10th place with 35 points, they would have five fewer points without VAR, dropping to 11th in the standings.

Impact on Other Teams

Manchester United, despite being one of the form teams in the league, would only have one additional point without VAR. Tottenham Hotspur would still be fifth in the table, losing two points without VAR. Aston Villa, currently in fourth place, would have two more points.

Arsenal, in third place, would only be three points ahead of Aston Villa instead of six, as they would lose one point without VAR. The current leaders, Liverpool, would have one fewer point, putting them on equal footing with Manchester City at the top of the table.

Conclusion

VAR has undoubtedly had a significant impact on the Premier League. While some teams have benefited, others have suffered due to its decisions. The alternative Premier League table provides valuable insights into the influence of VAR on team standings. As the debate surrounding VAR continues, it is crucial for PGMOL to address concerns and strive for improved implementation.
