Premier League 2023/24 Yellow and Red Card Rules and Leaders

The 2023/24 Premier League season has introduced new rule changes to address deliberate time-wasting and foul play in English top-flight matches. Referees will now adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards players attempting to disrupt the flow of games by wasting time, including delaying opposition free-kicks. This has resulted in an increase in yellow and red cards, as referees enforce the new rules more strictly and add more time at the end of matches.

Premier League Yellow and Red Card Suspension Rules

The standard in-game rules remain the same in the Premier League, where two yellow cards in a match lead to a red card and immediate player dismissal. A player receiving two yellow cards will face a one-game ban, while a straight red card incurs a three-game ban. However, the length of suspension can be adjusted in certain scenarios involving violent conduct.

Yellow card accumulation throughout the season also triggers suspensions. If a player accumulates five yellow cards in the first 19 games, they will be suspended for one game. Similarly, if a player collects 10 yellow cards before or including the 32nd game, they will face a two-match ban.

Premier League 2023/24 Yellow and Red Card Leaders

Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United, Joao Palhinha of Fulham, and Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea currently hold the record for the most yellow cards in the 2023/24 Premier League season, with nine each. Chelsea has received the highest number of yellow cards as a team, with 73. The record for the most yellow cards in a single Premier League season is held by Leeds United, who received 101 yellow cards in the 2021/22 season.

Below is a list of players who have accumulated the most yellow cards so far in the Premier League season:

  • Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) - 9 yellow cards in 23 matches
  • Joao Palhinha (Fulham) - 9 yellow cards in 21 matches
  • Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea) - 9 yellow cards in 21 matches
  • Darwin Nunez (Liverpool) - 8 yellow cards in 23 matches
  • Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) - 8 yellow cards in 23 matches
  • Mario Lemina (Wolves) - 8 yellow cards in 21 matches
  • Christian Norgaard (Brentford) - 8 yellow cards in 21 matches
  • Edson Alvarez (West Ham) - 8 yellow cards in 20 matches

For red cards, the length of suspension depends on the type of sending-off. A three-match suspension is imposed for violent conduct or dangerous fouls, while a one-match suspension is given for a second yellow card or a last-man foul. The Football Association (FA) has the authority to review incidents and add additional suspension time at its discretion.

The first player to receive two red cards in the 2023/24 season was Oliver McBurnie of Sheffield United, who was sent off for a second booking against Burnley. This means he will face an additional one-match ban on top of the usual one-match ban. Yves Bissouma of Tottenham also received two red cards, with an extra match added to his suspension. The data is accurate as of February 1, 2024, and includes red cards that were later rescinded upon post-match review.

Here is a list of players with the most red cards in the Premier League 2023/24 season:

  • Oliver McBurnie (Sheffield United) - 2 red cards, 2 matches suspended (1 additional match)
  • Yves Bissouma (Tottenham) - 2 red cards, 4 matches suspended (1 additional match)
  • Fabio Vieira (Arsenal) - 1 red card, 3 matches suspended
