Founded in 1885 as a result of several local clubs merging to form one competitive force (source), Luton Town began their journey playing friendly matches before joining the Southern League at its inception in 1894. The early years were characterized by financial struggles due to low match attendances despite considerable successes on the field.
In those initial years, notable achievements included winning the United League title thrice between 1897–98 and 1901–02 (source). Despite these successes, it took time for Luton to establish itself firmly within English professional football circles.
