Premier League Sack Race: Who Will Be the Next Manager to Go?

The first half of the 2023/24 Premier League season has seen club owners exercise restraint when it comes to sacking managers. However, as the business end of the season approaches, the Premier League sack race is expected to intensify.

Steve Cooper, the former Nottingham Forest boss, recently became the third Premier League manager to be sacked. After a poor run of results, the City Ground chiefs decided to bring in Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Tottenham and Wolves gaffer, just before Christmas.

With Cooper's departure, attention now turns to who will be the next manager to go. The pressure is mounting on several bosses, and it's only a matter of time before another club decides to make a change.

Leading Contenders for the Chop

Here are the leading contenders for the next Premier League manager to leave:

  1. Roy Hodgson: Crystal Palace are currently in a relegation battle, and while Hodgson is a legend of the game, his future at the club is uncertain. If Palace fails to turn their form around, it's likely that a changing of the guard will occur when Hodgson's contract expires at the end of the season.

  2. Mauricio Pochettino: The former Tottenham boss is struggling to make an impact at Chelsea, and the team is far behind in the race for the Champions League. After a couple of years of upheaval at Stamford Bridge, expectations were high for Pochettino, but he has failed to deliver.

  3. Jurgen Klopp: Although Klopp has announced that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, there is still a possibility that the club could sack him if results start to decline. The pressure is on for Liverpool to secure their first Premier League title outside of the Covid-19 season.

  4. Vincent Kompany: Despite the struggles of the three promoted sides, it's unlikely that Burnley would sack Vincent Kompany. The Manchester City legend has had a transformative effect on the club, and his commitment to playing out from the back is commendable. However, in the unpredictable world of the Premier League relegation fight, anything can happen.

  5. Eddie Howe: After an impressive season at Newcastle last year, Eddie Howe has found it difficult to replicate that success. Injuries have hampered the squad, and if results continue to go against them, Newcastle may consider parting ways with Howe.

  6. Erik ten Hag: Manchester United's poor start to the season has put Erik ten Hag's position at risk. Questionable signings and a lack of clear playing style have contributed to the team's struggles. While the fans have not turned on him yet, some players appear to have lost motivation, reminiscent of past situations with Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

These are the current leading contenders for the next Premier League manager to leave. The odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and app. As the season progresses, the sack race is sure to heat up, and it will be interesting to see who will be the next casualty in the Premier League managerial merry-go-round.
