Premier League European Qualification: Manchester United Leads Race for Europa Conference League

Manchester United currently holds the advantage in the race for qualification to the Europa Conference League in the Premier League. This comes after Liverpool's victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

The upcoming changes to the format of the Champions League, which will adopt a 'Swiss model' next season, could potentially see five English clubs competing in the tournament. Instead of the current 32 clubs, there will be 36 clubs participating in the next season's Champions League. Two of the additional four places will be awarded to the best-performing nations in the 2023/24 season.

In the past six seasons, the Premier League would have been granted an extra place in the Champions League, with the fifth-placed team being the beneficiary. However, this season, both Newcastle United and Manchester United have had disappointing campaigns, which may affect the Premier League's chances of securing an additional place. As it stands, Italy and Germany are in line to claim the extra spots, but England remains in a strong position.

If England fails to be among the top two performing countries in the 2023/24 season, the top four teams in the Premier League will automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage without having to go through the qualifying rounds.

Moving on to the other European competitions, there are two Europa League places up for grabs. One spot is reserved for the highest-placed team that does not qualify for the Champions League, while the other is awarded to the winners of the FA Cup. Both teams enter the Europa League at the group stage.

As for the Europa Conference League, the winners of the Carabao Cup earn a place in the play-off stages. However, since Liverpool is unlikely to require this spot due to their victory over Chelsea, it will go to the highest-placed team that is not already qualified for a European competition.

In the event that a team outside the top four wins either the Champions League or the Europa League, there will be five English representatives in the Champions League. If the Premier League is one of the top-performing leagues in the 2023/24 season, this number could increase to six.

To summarize, the top four teams in the Premier League secure qualification for the Champions League. The fifth-placed team typically earns a spot in the Europa League, with the sixth-placed team also qualifying if the FA Cup winners have already secured a European place. Similarly, if the Carabao Cup winners have already qualified for Europe, the next best-placed team in the Premier League enters the play-off stages of the Europa Conference League.

As it stands, the current European qualifiers from the Premier League for the 2024/25 season are as follows:

  • Champions League: Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Aston Villa
  • Europa League: Tottenham
  • Conference League: Manchester United
