Premier League 2023/24: New Rules, Yellow and Red Card Leaders, and TV Channels

The 2023/24 Premier League season has introduced new rule changes to address deliberate time-wasting and foul play in English top-flight matches. Referees will now adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards players attempting to disrupt the flow of games by wasting time, including delaying opposition free-kicks. This has resulted in an increase in yellow and red cards, as referees enforce the new rules more strictly and add more time at the end of matches.

Premier League Yellow and Red Card Suspension Rules

The standard in-game rules remain the same in the Premier League, where two yellow cards in a match lead to a red card and immediate player dismissal. A player receiving two yellow cards will face a one-game ban, while a straight red card incurs a three-game ban. However, the length of suspension can be adjusted in certain scenarios involving violent conduct.

Yellow card accumulation throughout the season also triggers suspensions. If a player accumulates five yellow cards in the first 19 games, they will be suspended for one game. Similarly, if a player collects 10 yellow cards before or including the 32nd game, they will face a two-match ban.

Premier League 2023/24 Yellow and Red Card Leaders

Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United currently holds the record for the most yellow cards in the 2023/24 Premier League season, with nine. Chelsea has received the most yellow cards as a team, with a total of 70. Leeds United holds the record for the most bookings in a single season, with 101 yellow cards in the 2021/22 season.

Below is a list of players who have accumulated the most yellow cards so far this season:

  • Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) - 9 yellow cards
  • Joao Palhinha (Fulham) - 9 yellow cards
  • Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea) - 8 yellow cards
  • Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) - 8 yellow cards
  • Christian Norgaard (Brentford) - 8 yellow cards

The Premier League red card suspension rules vary depending on the type of sending-off. A three-match suspension is imposed for violent conduct or dangerous fouls, while a one-match suspension is given for a second yellow card or a last-man foul. The Football Association (FA) has the authority to review incidents and add additional suspension time at its discretion.

The following players have received the most red cards in the 2023/24 Premier League season:

  • Oliver McBurnie (Sheffield United) - 2 red cards
  • Yves Bissouma (Tottenham) - 2 red cards
  • Fabio Vieira (Arsenal) - 1 red card
  • Joe Worrall (Nottingham Forest) - 1 red card
  • Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - 1 red card

Please note that the data is accurate as of January 30, 2024, and includes red cards that were later rescinded upon post-match review.
