Manchester United's Impressive Young Midfielder

Manchester United faced Luton with two midfielders on the pitch - an 18-year-old and a four-time Champions League winner. Surprisingly, it was the teenager, Kobbie Mainoo, who stood out with his expert display. Mainoo showcased his skills by winning nine possessions in the defensive and middle thirds, surpassing his teammates by a significant margin. He also successfully bypassed an opposition midfielder on six out of seven attempts. In contrast, Casemiro of Manchester United failed to make an impact, unable to run past any of his opponents or win a single ball in the defensive third. Jamie Redknapp praised Mainoo's performance, highlighting his youthfulness and presence.

This impressive display by Mainoo could signal a changing of the guard in the United midfield.

Luton's Evolving Style

Under the guidance of Rob Edwards, Luton's evolution has been captivating. In their last six Premier League games, Luton has averaged 55.21% possession, ranking ninth among all teams during that period. In their match against Manchester United, Luton out-passed them 519 to 389. Their revamped man-for-man style, led by Ross Barkley and Albert Sambi Lokonga, combines elements of Pep Guardiola's tactics, Marcelo Bielsa's approach, and Sam Allardyce's set-piece expertise. This unique blend has proven difficult for opposing teams to handle. Although Manchester United initially had success for 10 minutes, they struggled once Luton found their rhythm. Erik ten Hag's men were fortunate to be ahead at halftime.

Despite lacking quality in the final third, Luton's attacking process is functioning at a high level. Only Manchester City and Liverpool have entered the opposition penalty area more frequently in the last six fixtures. Additionally, only City, Liverpool, and Arsenal are averaging more shots during that time. Luton is becoming the team to watch, and if they are to survive, they will do it in style.

Sheffield United's Struggles

Sheffield United's chances of remaining in the Premier League look bleak, especially after Mason Holgate's reckless challenge. Holgate's attempt to tackle Brighton's Kauro Mitoma resulted in a red card and an inevitable defeat for his team. This was Holgate's third straight red card this season, making him the Premier League player with the most red cards during that time.

Sheffield United's defensive woes are also evident in their record-breaking statistics. They have conceded 65 goals in their first 25 matches, the most ever by a team in the Premier League. In fact, the last time a team shipped more goals in their first 25 games of an English top-flight season was in 1963-64. Additionally, Sheffield United has conceded 36 goals in 13 home games, a feat only surpassed by Darwen in 1891-92 and Aston Villa in 1935-36.

While Chris Wilder may not be directly responsible for Holgate's actions, he did sign the center-back on loan from Everton. This desperate signing reflects the desperate situation of a club that is heading towards relegation in a historic fashion.
