History in the Making: First British South Asian Referee in Premier League

Referee Sunny Singh Gill will make history as the first British South Asian referee in the Premier League when he officiates Luton Town's match against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Gill's appointment marks the seventh time this season that a referee outside of the PGMOL's Select Group has been chosen to officiate a top-flight game. Earlier this season, Gill became the first British South Asian to referee a match between two Premier League teams during the FA Cup fourth round tie between Brighton and Hove Albion and Sheffield United. Gill comes from a family of football referees, with his father Jarnail being the first and only referee in English league football to wear a turban. Gill's brother Bhupinder also made history as the first Sikh-Punjabi linesman in the Premier League. Gill's passion for football started at a young age, growing up in a household where his father was a referee. He began officiating Sunday League matches at the age of 17 and has since worked hard to improve his skills with the help of the PGMOL and his coaches. Gill's ultimate goal is to become the first South Asian referee in the Premier League.
