Everton's Points Deduction Reduced to Six in Successful Appeal

Everton Football Club's points deduction for breaching Premier League spending rules has been reduced from 10 to six points. The Merseyside club was initially docked 10 points in November for allegedly breaching profit and sustainability (PSR) rules in the 2021/22 season.

Successful Appeal

Everton immediately announced their intention to appeal the decision, and their appeal has been successful. As a result, the club now has 26 points, lifting them to 15th in the table and six points clear of the relegation zone.

Separate Charges

However, Everton and Nottingham Forest are still facing separate charges relating to the 2022/23 season. The details of these charges have not been disclosed.

Club's Statement

In a statement, Everton expressed their satisfaction with the reduction in the points sanction. They highlighted that the Appeal Board considered the original 10-point deduction to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks. The club also emphasized their pleasure at the Appeal Board's decision to overturn the finding that the club failed to act in utmost good faith.

Commitment to Cooperation

Despite the successful appeal, Everton remains fully committed to cooperating with the Premier League in the ongoing proceedings for the accounting period ending in June 2023. The club is still considering the wider implications of the decision and will not provide further comment at this time.

Appeal Process

The appeal was heard over three days earlier this month by an Appeal Board consisting of Sir Gary Hickinbottom (Chair), Daniel Alexander KC, and Katherine Apps KC. Everton appealed the sanction on nine grounds, with two of those grounds being upheld.

In conclusion, Everton's points deduction has been reduced from 10 to six points, providing the club with a boost in their league position. However, the club still faces separate charges for the upcoming season. Everton remains committed to cooperating with the Premier League and will continue to assess the implications of the decision.
